Concerns about possible climate change have become more and more a part of the national and international dialogues on weather. Extreme weather and higher demand for energy are just two issues brought out in a bipartisan report generated earlier this year. In addition to weather-related effects, there are concerns that warmer temperatures pose a threat to ocean life, crop production, and overall productivity in farming and construction sectors.

Ik zal u vertellen waarom dit onderwerp vandaag mijn speciale aandacht heeft. Op een woensdagavonddienst in onze Christian Science kerk, gaf iemand een getuigenis van een genezing. Deze man komt een paar keer per jaar in deze omgeving en bezoekt dan onze kerk. Hij vertelde dat hij zich veel zorgen had gemaakt over een van zijn dochters want ze was erg ziek geweest. En ze was genezen. Nederig sloot hij zijn getuigenis af met de woorden: “Ik ben heel dankbaar dat ik die angst nooit meer zal meemaken, want ik heb Christian Science om angst de baas te zijn”.

Christian Science kerken houden wekelijks getuigenisbijeenkomsten, waarin mensen vertellen hoe hun studie in deze wetenschap hen heeft geholpen om genezing te krijgen of hen heeft geholpen op andere manieren. Ik geef toe dat gedurende deze jaren als er iemand opstond om een getuigenis af te leggen over hoe gebed hielp bij verloren sleutels of een portemonnee, ik meestal geïrriteerd raakte. “Kom op”, dacht ik dan bij mijzelf, “is dat alles wat je hebt beleefd?”

Natuurlijk heb ik ook wel eens gebeden voor verloren voorwerpen en was dankbaar deze terug te vinden, maar ik zou daarover nooit een getuigenis afleggen! Ik begreep toen nog niet goed hoeveel genezing de dankbaarheid voor simpele zegeningen bevat.

The healing of disease in Christian Science is about understanding that we are not subject to disease, because God, Spirit, never created it. However fearful it may seem, disease is never sent by God, good, so disease is in fact a mesmeric illusion, merely a false thought, that can be erased through the understanding of our pure, perfect, harmonious individuality as Spirit's expression.

Mary Baker Eddy indicated this when she wrote: “When I have most clearly seen and most sensibly felt that the infinite recognizes no disease, this has not separated me from God, but has so bound me to Him as to enable me instantaneously to heal a cancer which had eaten its way to the jugular vein” (Unity of Good, p. 7). People today, too, are finding healing of cancer as well as other so-called incurable diseases through their earnest study and practice of Christian Science.

Ruimere opvattingen

Wij moeten tot steeds ruimere opvattingen van het zijn komen (Wetenschap en Gezondheid blz. 265:5). “Tot ruimere opvattingen” komen is zoiets als uit de duisternis in het licht komen, uitleggen wat niet begrepen wordt, of niet voor de hand ligt. Wij horen vaak verhalen waarbij mensen zo gehypnotiseerd worden dat zij geloven dat er iets is als het er niet is, maar soms ook in het omgekeerde geval - iemand laten geloven dat iets er NIET is, als het er WEL is. Is zoiets niet veelzeggend voor deze tijd, waarin we zo vaak worden gemesmeriseerd door beelden van economische recessie, van een slechte gezondheid, gebrek aan eenheid in het gezin en gebrek aan werkgelegenheid? Denken wij dat Gods substantie en goedheid afwezig zijn? We moeten weten dat de stoffelijke zintuigen ons niet voor de gek kunnen houden door te vertellen dat het goede verdwenen is. Onze ingeboren geestelijke zin stelt ons in staat gevrijwaard te blijven voor de hypnose van gebrek en niet-zijn. Elk moment van de dag is een goed moment om je bewust te zijn van de alles-omvattende aanwezigheid van Liefde, die ieder van ons omvat, hier en nu, altijd. Deze Liefde is nooit, onder wat voor moeilijke omstandigheden we ook verkeren, ook maar voor een moment afwezig, en geen macht op aarde kan ons verhinderen Gods liefde te voelen, precies zoals wij die nodig hebben, of dat nu is als een vader, als moeder, of echtgenoot, vrouw of broer. Op dit ogenblik heeft de goddelijke Liefde ons lief, ‘behoed, bemind en gezegend’ zoals een gezang zegt (Gezangboek van de Christelijke Wetenschap, gezang 278).
